Home Science- Culinary Art
The Mayo College Girls' School offers a culinary education program.
At Mayo College Girls' School, we believe that teaching children the basics of
cooking and baking is a wonderful way to broaden their knowledge of nutritious food and practical
nutrition. Early education in healthy eating habits significantly impacts health and well-being
throughout life, making it crucial to foster a positive relationship with food from a young age.
This journey begins with our cooking classes, which start in junior high school.
The Home Science, Food, and Nutrition department introduces essential life skills
and culinary activities from Class VI and offers them as optional subjects and activities in Classes
IX and XI. Culinary education fosters teamwork and integrates seamlessly with key learning areas,
enhancing critical thinking skills and promoting an understanding of our environment and community.
Students gain a deep appreciation for sustainable living through hands-on
experiences like digging, picking, mixing, chopping, and sharing meals. They become more willing to
experiment with foods, build self-confidence, absorb and recall-related information, and develop a
keen appetite for learning more. In the safe and supportive environment of Mayo College Girls'
School, our cooking and baking classes equip children with a range of skills to prepare, cook, and
enjoy healthy snacks and meals. Students can confidently apply this knowledge to their home cooking,
effortlessly recreating these dishes. Additionally, students learn about the importance of nutrition
and how to make healthier choices when it comes to food. They also develop teamwork and
communication skills while working together in the kitchen, fostering a sense of community and
collaboration.
Schools are an ideal setting to implement cooking and baking programs, as they
provide continuous and intensive contact with children during their formative years. By integrating
nutrition messages into our curriculum, we reinforce the authority of this vital information and
help set the foundation for a lifetime of healthy eating habits. Culinary Education at Mayo College
Girls' School aims to empower students with the knowledge and skills needed to make informed
decisions about their diet and nutrition. Through hands-on experiences in the kitchen, students
learn practical cooking techniques and gain an appreciation for the importance of using fresh, whole
ingredients in their meals.
Our goal is to empower students to make informed choices about their diet and
overall well-being.
